Our History

During the first annual Ethiopian Heritage Association in North America festival, held in Washington DC in July 2011, a group of Ethiopian women had a breakfast meeting to congratulate Judge Birtukan Mideksa, a former prisoner of conscience, for her release from prison. At that meeting, it was suggested to have an international conference of Ethiopian women in the Diaspora. To that end, a preparatory conference was suggested to be held in Washington, DC and four women volunteered to organize the preparatory conference.

The preparatory conference was held on October 15, 2011 at Howard University in Washington, DC.
