Birth of CREW

Short History

During the first annual Ethiopian Heritage Association in North America festival, held in Washington DC in July 2011, a group of Ethiopian women had a breakfast meeting to congratulate Judge Birtukan Mideksa, a former prisoner of conscience, for her release from prison. At that meeting, it was suggested to have an international conference of Ethiopian women in the Diaspora. To that end, a preparatory conference was suggested to be held in Washington, DC and four women volunteered to organize the preparatory conference.

The preparatory conference was held on October 15, 2011 at Howard University in Washington, DC. Sixteen Ethiopian women who live in different states and cities in the United States attended the one-day preparatory conference. After examining the current situations of Ethiopian women in Ethiopia and abroad, the preparatory conference participants affirmed the need to organize an international conference of Ethiopian women in the Diaspora and created a Conference Coordinating Committee called Ethiopian Women Conference Coordinating Committee (EWCCC). All the sixteen participants of the preparatory conference became members of EWCCC. EWCCC was not affiliated with any political, government or civic organizations. It was an independent body created to organize the first International Conference of Ethiopian Women in the Diaspora. The theme of the conference was “Empowering Ethiopian Women and Advancing Their Rights.” Participants at the preparatory conference suggested topics to be covered at the conference. Based on those suggestions, call for paper was issued and Ethiopian women and others who have studied about Ethiopia were encouraged to submit papers for the conference.

The Mission of the proposed three-day Conference was to strengthen independent voices of Ethiopian women by highlighting and examining different issues pertinent to women and their status in society. It was hoped that the Conference would provide a forum to the participants to freely and openly discuss the issues of Ethiopian women in Ethiopia and in the Diaspora thereby allowing them to propose ideas to advance their rights.

Furthermore, it was hoped that the conference would create and build inter-generational perspectives and views of Diaspora Ethiopian women. It was also hope that the conference would be a venue for networking and pulling resources to empower Ethiopian women and advance their rights. It would give opportunities for participants to build consensus to organize in order to address Ethiopian women’s issues and concerns that are critical in the 21st century.

The conference was held March 11 to 12, 2012.  Research papers on a variety of topics related to the current status of Ethiopian women at home and abroad were presented. Some of the issues discussed at the Conference included:

  • Poverty and the Feminization of Poverty in Ethiopia;
  • Women and Education in Ethiopia;
  • Health issues of Ethiopian Women;
  • Women in Leadership Positions in Ethiopia;
  • Violence against Ethiopian Women at Home and Abroad;
  • Trafficking of Women and the Migration of Ethiopian Women to the Middle Eastern Countries and their Employment Conditions;
  • Land Grab in Ethiopia and its Impact on Ethiopian Women;
  • The Role of Media in Advancing Women’s Rights;
  • The Social and Economic Conditions of Ethiopian Women in the Diaspora

The three days conference discussed these issues and recommended the following:

Recommendations/Outcome of Conference

A major recommendation of the conference was to create a strong Ethiopian women’s organization to address the issues discussed at the conference. The proposed organization would address the following major issues discussed at the conference.

  1. Poverty has been singled out as the root cause for all the problems Ethiopian women face. Advocacy for economic opportunities for women in Ethiopia and abroad is fundamental and necessary.
  2. Promoting the education of women is important to empowering women. The education of girls and women in Ethiopia must be promoted at an international level to narrow the gender gap in access to education.
  3. According to the presentations in the conference, the situations of Ethiopian domestic workers in the Arab countries is extremely dangerous and Ethiopian women in the Diaspora should be the voices for the voiceless by advocating for the rights of Ethiopian domestic workers in the Middle Eastern countries.. The countries who import workers need to be pressured to adhere to international labor laws. The Ethiopian government should be urged to protect its citizens who are suffering in the Arab countries under slave-like conditions.
  4. Promoting human rights and the rule of law should be paramount to the new organization that should be created. The Ethiopian government should be challenged to allow freedom of press and associations in Ethiopia, which are basic human rights and foundations to establish a democratic country.
  5. Support and strengthen civil society organizations especially independent Ethiopian women’s organizations in Ethiopia and abroad. The Societies and Charities law that was enacted in 2009 in Ethiopia has been an obstacle to the development of civil societies in Ethiopia. The government of Ethiopia should be challenged to repeal this law.
  6. Establish and strengthen initiatives among women in the Diaspora to promote democratic culture and tolerance, work on conflict prevention and resolution, advocacy and international networking.
  7. Address the land grab situations in Ethiopia and its impact on women. Work with other organizations who are working on this issue.

As per the recommendation of conference participants,  twenty-five of the conference participants met on March 25, 2012 at Sankofa restaurant in Washington, DC and created the Center for the Rights of Ethiopian Women (CREW).
